Scope note: Acumulación de BILIRRUBINA, un producto de la degradación de las PROTEÍNAS HEMO, en la SANGRE durante las primeras semanas de la vida. Puede dar lugar a ICTERICIA NEONATAL. El exceso de bilirrunina puede deberse a la forma no conjugada (indirecta) o conjugada (directa). La afección puede ser autolimitada (ICTERICIA NEONATAL FISIOLÓGICA) o patológica, con concentraciones tóxicas de bilirrubina.

Scope note: Accumulation of BILIRUBIN, a breakdown product of HEME PROTEINS, in the BLOOD during the first weeks of life. This may lead to NEONATAL JAUNDICE. The excess bilirubin may exist in the unconjugated (indirect) or the conjugated (direct) form. The condition may be self-limiting (PHYSIOLOGICAL NEONATAL JAUNDICE) or pathological with toxic levels of bilirubin.
